The all-weather pitches commenced operations in August 2003 and have proven to be e great revenue stream that both services our capital loan and give both ourselves and our bank the confidence to keep moving forward. These pitches also represent, on a daily basis, the spirit of voluntarism in this club as we have a roster of over sixty people who help run the pitches every evening. We were now also looking way into the future and were discussing the possible purchase of the Health Service Executive (HSE) land next door. This would represent a huge psychological and financial step for the club but it is a situation that must be faced up to if future generations are to enjoy extended facilities.

All weather Pitches

Lightning strikes a second time! We were again successful in our Capital Sports Programme and received another €80,000! We had been hoping for this and had applied months beforehand for planning for our next project – the erection of new additional changing rooms, showers and a gymnasium. In August 2003 we officially opened our new pitch and all-weather pitches. The highlight of the day was a match between the Clonmel 1st XV and a President’s (J.J. Killian) XV, which included such stars as Mick Galwey and Peter Clohessy. Those who had not visited the club for some time were bowled over by the new-look premises.

Armed with this latest injection of capital, we were already looking forward to the next project – the construction of additional changing rooms / showers and a gymnasium. More drawings / plans / negotiations and planning applications of course. To add to the workload, all planning applications had to be submitted to both Clonmel Borough Council and South Tipperary County Council, as the boundary between both Local Authorities runs through the centre of the club! Just our luck! In the meantime, because we would now be in receipt of €160,000 from the Department of Arts, Sports and Tourism over two years, we got into a maze of documentation and administration, far too complicated to describe here, involving the club, the department, our bank, the club Trustees, Land Registry  and all the respective solicitors. What a headache, but it was worth it in the end.
