The Development of Clonmel RFC: 1999 to 2012
“It’s been tough, but somebody has to do it!
We were happy with our achievements – several clubs around Munster came to have a look and to get some ideas towards their own development – we were happy to oblige with information. The only thing which we had not gotten to was the Spectator Stand. But the spirit was still restless and soon we were talking of where we would go next. The Finance & Development committee had also evolved and by late 2007 it looked like this: J.J. Killian (Chairman), Joe Flynn, Tom Fennessy, Michael Campbell, Paul Garrett, Mark Small and Paul Curran. Club Chairman also sat in frequently. There was a strange combination of factors at play now – many people around the club were much impressed by what had been achieved and were actively encouraging further development. Some chance conversations and the promise of financial support got the F&D committee thinking again – we would build the Spectator Stand!
Again, after more discussion, we decided to compile another five-year plan. When it was completed it had three main planks – construction of the Spectator Stand / the acquisition of six additional acres of adjoining land and the upgrading / refurbishment of the clubhouse. A chance conversation with a club member resulted in him offering €1000 towards club development – further F&D committee discussion from this threw up the idea for a “100 Club” – could we get 100 people to contribute €1000 each to club development. In the meantime we had been through the usual administration of a planning application for the spectator stand, fire certification application, construction drawings, etc. We had also during the year applied for further funding from both Local Authorities and thankfully the response was positive on both fronts. A flash of inspiration now moved us to consider a “Launch Night” for our Development Plan 2008-2012 – we fixed on 25th January 2008. Again the administrative machine, with our administrator Debbie pushed to the limit, went into action – design / production of a brochure / invitations / various forms / catering considerations had to be sorted.

The night was an outstanding success – the guests who included T.D.’s, local officials, business people and Munster’s CEO and President. We were again bowled over by the depth of goodwill and support that exists locally towards this club – the “100 Club” was filled out within weeks and we were able to put a timetable on our ambitions. At this moment we are planning the spectator stand, are examining the various improvements we can make to the clubhouse and will soon begin negotiations to acquire additional land. We’ll keep you with us on this journey!
