Clonmel still unbeaten at top of the league Richmond 9 Clonmel 30. Clonmel recorded their third win of the season in the Munster League Division 1 when they defeated Richmond RFC in Limerick to remain on top of the league table. The game was played in perfect conditions on a firm pitch. This was ideally suited to Clonmel’s brand of running rugby but as often is the case with Richmond matches it became a forward battle of attrition. Our backs capitalised on whatever chances were given to them by the forwards and scored three fine tries in the process. Clonmel took the lead in the first `10 minutes after some battling forward exchanges with a penalty from Conor Cooney. Conor added another penalty after 15 minutes to lead 6—0. In the last quarter of the first half after great running by the backs Luke Hogan scored a well worked try converted by Conor Cooney to leave the half-time score: Richmond 3 Clonmel 13. After the resumption Richmond added another penalty which Clonmel replied to again through the boot of Conor Cooney. Clonmel now lead by 16—6. However, Clonmel were unable to convert their superiority into scores until Dylan Cadogan managed to break away and score in the corner. Conor Cooney converted from a difficult angle. Going into the final quarter Richmond added a penalty. Over the last 10 minutes the game became ragged as each side made changes but Clonmel finished with a flourish when skipper Tony Cantwell scored at the posts. Following the conversion by Conor Cooney, Clonmel ran out worthy winners 30—9. A good team performance all round with all players contributing to this fine away win. Next up are Bandon next Saturday Oct 15th away in the Challenge Cup.
